(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) makes a point at a press conference Wednesday where he released the results of a new investigation that found many Christmas tree ornaments sold in stores across the country were produced under illegal sweatshop conditions in China. The investigation, which was conducted in China by the National Labor Committee, found that some of the workers are as young as 12 years old, are paid 26 cents an hour, and work more than 100 hours per week. Dorgan called on Congress to pass legislation he authored to ban products produced in sweatshops from being sold in U.S. stores.

Earlier this year, Senator Dorgan introduced a bill to re-establish a permanent disaster aid program that will help family farmers and ranchers through difficult times. Though a disaster aid program was for years a staple of the U.S. farm program, the last two Farm Bills did not include reliable disaster assistance – forcing producers to rely on ad hoc legislation when disaster strikes.
