(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) said the Senate confirmed Dan Hovland’s nomination for the western district federal judgeship in North Dakota late Thursday night.
Hovland will succeed incumbent judge Patrick Conmy of Bismarck. Dorgan said President Bush will now sign a commission which will make Hovland’s judgeship official.
Dorgan said he is pleased one of North Dakota’s two open federal district judgeships will now be filled by such a fine attorney. “Dan Hovland has developed a solid record of public service,” said Dorgan, “and I was pleased to support his nomination.”
Hovland grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota and received his undergraduate degree from Concordia College and his law degree from the University of North Dakota. Early in his career, he served as a clerk for North Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice Ralph Erickstad.
Dorgan said the nomination of Ralph Erickson for the eastern federal district judgeship will be considered in the 108th Congress soon after it convenes in January 2003. He said he will do all he can to see that Erickson’s nomination is handled on an expedited basis.
